Implementation of real time edge detection system for HD video on Zynq

Several image processing applications (edge detection, feature extraction, tracking, pattern recognition ...) are so computationally and software solutions cannot meet the real-time requirements [1, 2]. In this work, we highlight a new and simple process to implement a real time edge detection enhancement algorithm on heterogeneous platforms. The implemented design extracts discontinuities in intensity from an HD video (1080x1920 pixels) at 60 fps. The architecture was designed in Matlab Simulink. The hardware IP core was generated with HDL coder, then packaged and implemented in an embedded platform (Zc702) with Xilinx Vivado environment. The experimental results show an accurate edge detection that satisfy the requirement of the realtime constraints. Keywords—Real time; Edge detection; HDL coder; Zynq
